Author's Diary

January 2007

It's a new year and I'm feeling motivated! And it's a good thing too, because I received a second design pass of my book today and I have less than a week to get comments to Simon & Schuster. This second pass incorporates all of the comments that we gave them on the first one, as well as includes any outstanding photos or info that the design department was waiting on. I'm going to start plowing through the book in the morning on a solid night's sleep and a fresh perspective.

Well, I'm once again fried. It was a real race against the clock to get comments to Michelle and Cara by today… actually I emailed them last night because I wanted the notes to be in their inbox when they got to work in the morning. But that means I was up at one in the morning typing up notes like a zombie, eyes blurry and head pounding. After I organized all my notes, I started to write a cover memo, but I realized that I kept making serious typos and my brain had essentially stopped functioning at that point, so I just emailed it off and said we'd talk on the phone in the morning if they had any questions. I'm going to take today off and try to recharge from the past week…maybe do laundry, clean…you know, the fun stuff…

Well, I'm still wiped out, but I got a GREAT email from Michelle today. ElleGirl has reviewed my book online and named it a recommended read!! I'm so excited!!!

Another milestone day. I turned over all of the release forms to S&S today for the book. Every woman that I profiled had to sign a release form giving me permission to write about them, print their photograph, and so on, and so I needed to have the agreement in writing. Getting all the forms in was a logistical nightmare to say the least, but it's finally done!

Michelle and some of her colleagues are in town this weekend for the American Library Association Conference (ALA) and I met up with them at a cocktail party for illustrator/writer Ashley Bryan at the Palace Ballroom downtown. It was great to see Michelle and meet some of her colleagues. We've got dinner plans for tomorrow night… I'm very excited for a night out with the girls!

What a great weekend…work and pleasure. I had a fabulous night out with Michelle and colleagues Jen Klonsky and Bethany Buck last night. Total girls night out…lots of fun, great food, great conversation.

Then today I went to the ALA Conference to check things out. All of the publishers had huge displays promoting their latest and greatest so librarians could get a sense of books they might want to acquire for their library collections. Michelle said that galleys for In Their Shoes had been swiped up really quickly and that their seemed to be a lot of interest in the book. I hope she's right!

Today I started designing promotional items for my book, like postcards, bookmarks, and so on. I can't wait to start spreading the word about In Their Shoes, and I want to have all my ducks lined up in a row so when the book comes out. I really enjoy this design phase… it's fun to think creatively about different ways to promote the book. I'm also sweating it out a little bit, because I'm waiting on approvals from a few of the women in the book who wanted to review their profile, and we're running out of time. Fingers crossed everything comes through in time!!! The book is about to go to print in a matter of days…
