January 2006

Author's Diary November 2006 November 7, 2006 I took part in a really interesting phone seminar today through the Author's Guild. It was all about book publicity, and how to get the word out about your book to the people who would be most interested in knowing about it. It was very insightful and I took a ton of notes. November 14, 2006 Today was headshot day. My friend Amanda (the woman I profiled as the photographer in the book) came over with her assistant and took new publicity pictures of me for the book and for my website. I don't like having my picture taken, so it was kind of stressing me out for the past few days. I mean, how was I going to make sure I had a "good hair day?" And what about those ever-darkening circles under my eyes? New wrinkles? And then there's the whole "I have absolutely nothing to wear" crisis that happened at about one o'clock this afternoon. |

Anyway…it's done. Amanda did a great job of relaxing me so that I wouldn't appear uptight. Her assistant helped by telling me a story of his audition for American Idol when they were in Seattle this fall. It was hysterical, and when he broke into his rendition of Celine Dion's It's All Coming Back to Me Now, I totally lost it. I think the story helped Amanda get some good pics… we'll see when I she emails me her selects next week! November 15, 2006 Today I interviewed an independent bookstore owner for the book, Roxanne Coady. Roxanne owns the bookstore R.J. Julia in Madison , CT, and is also the author of the new book, The Book That Changed My Life. Roxanne and I caught up while she was in the car en route from her bookstore in Connecticut to a reading in Boston. The interview went very well… I'm so glad we were able to squeeze it in and include it in the book… I really love the idea of including a small business owner, since so many women go on to own companies. November 20, 2006 Today was my last interview! I interviewed actor Maura Tierney, who I've been a huge fan of for years. I first became familiar with her during her run on the awesome sitcom NewsRadio, and was psyched when she joined the cast of one of my favorite primetime shows, ER. I'm so happy that she has joined the other women to be a part of In Their Shoes…she is someone I really admire, and the work she does is so good. It was challenging finding time on Maura's schedule for our interview, but she had just headed back to NYC for the Thanksgiving holiday, and we caught up while she was at her home there. The interview went very well—Maura shared some really great information that the many teen girls who aspire to a career in acting will embrace. I'm going to spend the weekend writing up this profile so I can have everything in my editor's email inbox by Monday morning. Once this profile is in, we're in great shape. Next will be the first design pass sometime in mid-December. November 24, 2006 I know it's technically a holiday (the day after Thanksgiving) or at least a very good shopping day, but I'm working. I am trying to compile all of the outstanding photos of the women for my book so I can get them to S&S ASAP. I've gotten just about all of the pictures in… I have to reshoot Kay Lakey, the physical therapist, because the digital pics I took before don't have great resolution. I got it scheduled for next week. November 30, 2006 Despite a wacky November snowstorm in Seattle, I drove uptown to photograph Kay Lakey today. It's funny…she was actually wearing the same top she was wearing when I first photographed her back in the spring. Anyway… I took a whole bunch of pictures so I could be sure I got the shot and then came home and dumped them into iPhoto. Everything looked good, so I overnighted a disk with the outstanding photos to Michelle for Monday morning delivery. I think that's it in terms of things the publisher is waiting on me for. Phew! back to top |
